back from London, here are some more info about the event held at Furtherfield Gallery, to present REFF RomaEuropa FakeFactory and the Augmented Reality Drug.

AR Drug, by Marco Bera/S4CAR Drug, by Marco Berardi/S4C

our wonderful friends at Shoot4Change came to see the exhibit and took these wonderful pictures about the performances and the presentation of the AR Drug. An enormous thanks to our newly found fried Marco Berardi for them!

An Augmented Reality Drug has been created and distributed to the visitors at the Furtherfield Gallery in London.
REFF, the fake institution created to enact innovative cultural policies all over the world used the opportunity offered by the exhibit on the “reinvention of reality” that was currently held at the Furtherfield Gallery in London to deliver their Augmented Reality Drug to the visitors.

The people at the opening of the exhibit have had the chance to taste the drug and to experiment with their effects: the possibility to create new forms of expression, to fill the world with digital content and to realize new forms of free, independent communication that are able to mutate our perception of cities and the spaces we live in, just like a psychoactive drug.
This is the metaphor used by Art is Open Source: the Augmented Reality Drug is really an open source software platform that allows people to use the so-called ubiquitous technologies, thus enabling the owners of iPhone and Android smartphones to freely create videos, sounds and other contents directly in the spaces and places of our cities. Completely new forms of communication that really change the way in which people communicate and relate with the rest of the world.

The drug has already been distributed in dozens of universities all over Europe, and hundreds of projects for the “methodological reinvention of reality” are popping up in the laboratories of these institutes.
Everyone is addicted!

A book is coming out in Italy (and an international version is following soon, before the end of the year) together with the next step in our action in favor of better innovation policies andpractices for arts and culture.

During these days Italy is living strange times, with a government that is something that could easily be called a “soft dictatorship”and an extensive crisis scenario across culture, imaginaries and perspectives.

This, in particular, is a peculiar day for Italy, as the governmental crisis began just a few hours ago. And it is indeed a very strange crisis, as the in-crisis government actually has loads of power (it managed to have the crisis postponed by 14 days, to be able to create a few more laws:) ), and the possible alternatives do not really offer any real difference to the currently running models.

This is a media dictatorship, as its power is based on 20+ years of television and on the social changes it induced in the population.

Current culture and art policies reflect that. Totally.

This difficult scenario is what induced us in the first place when we created REFF, RomaEuropa FakeFactory.

A quick-quick history: in 2008 a big italian culture/arts institution created an international competition that was really terrible in terms of the supported cultural policies, of artists’ rights and of intellectual property issues. We, a group of artists and activists together with 80+ partners all over the world , created REFF, a fake institution and a competition just like the “original” one, only supporting open, innovative practices and policies.

The impact was so strong that REFF was invited at the Cultural Commission of the Italian Senate.

The original institution (theFondazione RomaEuropa) was forced to change its policies and to transform its practices, becoming just like REFF :)

The action continued, as the original Fondazione became the focus of several large operators’ assault on the digital imaginaries of people to create what they openly call the Digital Class.

This process saw the biggest italian telco operator (Telecom Italia) invading practically every space in digital arts, leading to a scenario in which even the absurd “Internet for Peace” campaign was possible: a telco operator was becoming a major political force in all the issues related to networks, digital innovation, intellectual property and publishing, obtaining the support of more that 70 representatives in both the Parlament and the Senate.

We leveraged REFF, our shadow institution, and uncovered many of these opaque processes. Last one of which is the assault on digital publishing industries: the market of ebooks and ebook readers is the latest area of assault on italy’s digital cultures scenario and on the practices of free expression and self-determination.

This is why together with FakePress wecreated this book.Together with the book a software platform will be released (GPL2 license) allowing people to freely create ebooks, and enhanced books featuring augmented reality, wide tagging, and fruibility across several devices.

The platform has been recently presented at Artissima with the help of the Piemonte Share Festival as an opportunity for publishing and expression practices for the arts and culture.

Multiple events will follow in the next days and months.

Stay tuned, if you like.

cheers.

[PRESS RELEASE – ENGLISH ]

Almost two years after its creation il 2009, the REFF – RomaEuropa FakeFactory is back with the publication of its book, published in Italy by DeriveApprodi & FakePress:

REFF RomaEuropa FakeFactory cover

REFF
The reinvention of the real through critical practices
of remix, mash-up, re-contextualization, reenactment

Foreword by: Bruce Sterling

Over 30 contributions ranging from critical articles to interviews; a catalog of 30 works exploring the themes of remix in an extended way; the special mentions of the 2009-2010 contest; a new experience of reading integrating the digital and paper dimentions trough the use of Augmented Reality and tagging; an open source tool for creating ubiquitous, cross-media publications, by FakePress.

From the foreword, by Bruce Sterling:

“Right now, the behaviors and activities commemorated in this book are bizarre. Very. They are so peculiar that they are inherently difficult to describe, because they come from the outer reaches of an emergent network-culture.
I could write an entire book about these ideas and practices, a book that would be science fiction, architecture fiction, design fiction, a technical manual and also a manifesto for network economics. That book would be rather like this book, only less entertaining.”

REFF. An example of an artistic, cultural and political act. A truly Augmented Reality, a multi-strata object that entices to be discovered, read and used with more “sense” up to the performative one. A new prototype of publication, beyond the e-book.

FakePress and Art is Open Source will present a workshop titled

“Next-step publishing: ubiquitous, disseminated, emergent, multi author narratives”

[program and info at the bottom of the article]

We can transform any space or surface into a display using electronic devices combined with location-based technologies, sensors, augmented reality and innovative visual surfaces. Furthermore, interactive surfaces are transforming the world, people and their activities.
It is progressively more possible – and accessible – to “write on the world“, layering contents, meanings, visuals and sensations that anyone can compose, diffuse and communicate.
The world transforms into a cross-medial polyphony built from ubiquitously accessible points of view: augmented reality, QRCodes, spime, fiducial markers, wearable technologies, portable electronic devices allow accessing content and information, and interacting with them directly from places, architectures, objects and bodies.
All this brings the word “publishing” into a totally new perspective, deeply mutating all of the roles involved: editors, authors, audiences, critics, curators. Roles that remix just as the visions and the contents, mutually interconnecting and overwriting each other, creating multiple and fluid visions of the world whose adoption can be a key element to the creation of new forms of expression, new sensibilities, new spaces.
The availability of ways to effectively stratify interpretations on the world in autonomous and incontrollable modalities gives rise to infinite possibilities for self-expression, self-determination and for the creation of sustainable opportunities which we have a chance to catch. Doing it effectively is a linguistic act and a cultural process which we can only activate through the emergence of imaginaries that allow for creation of these autonomous realities, their integration in the flow of our daily lives and the escape from those “walled gardens”, dead ends and mouse-traps that constantly sit around the corners of technological adoption.
During the workshop we will present these concepts throughout the disciplines and practices of art design and communication sciences, of digital and visual cultures, of hacking and activism.
Theory will go side by side with practice: we will introduce our newly developed Open Source platform that will be released by november under a GPL2 license, through which any WordPress blog can be transformed into a multichannel publishing system with cross-medial features (web, mobile, paper, augmented reality, location based, digital book…).
We will then show, in practice and getting people involved, how it is possible to use the platform to create a cross-medial publication that is accessible geographically, in proximity, architecturally, from objects “filled” with content and information, in augmented reality, from mobile phones, tablets and computers, and also from paper publications.
For anyone attending: please bring your laptop. The workshop will be useful even if you don’t bring your laptop with you, but you’ll have a chance to create your own example publication if you do bring it.

REFF, RomaEuropaFakeFactory, has been interviewed in Rome during Joy Ito’s lectio magistralis held at the italian parlament, in an event organized by Capitale Digitale, a program on digital cultures, economics, creativity and innovation created by Telecom Italia.

We at AOS are working hard for the future of REFF. The Creatives for Net Neutrality campaign will soon have fantastic news, as will the whole project connected to innovation and contemporary creativity that is represented by REFF.

Stay tuned…

REFF, RomaEuropaFAKEFactory was featured in an article on Wired Italia, October 2009 issue

REFF on Wired

Great News for REFF, RomaEuropa FakeFactory!

REFF logo, RomaEuropa FakeFactoryREFF logo, RomaEuropa FakeFactory

RomaEuropa Web Factory’s second edition is about to start up.

REFF attended the press conference held at the Opificio Telecom in Rome, on Wednsday September 16h 2009, to check out the informations that were being diffused on the web about the innovations of this year’s edition of the Fondazione Romaeuropa’s networked competition.

While watching the press conference, it seemed as if we were looking in the mirror. Because RomaEuropa WebFactory 2009/2010 edition is actually indistinguishable from last year’s RomaEuropa FakeFactory!

  • Open licenses.
  • The works are remixes of existing ones.
  • Democratic voting.
  • Experts and academics evaluating the submitted works through their reviews

All of these things are going to be included in this year’s RomaEuropa WebFactory, whose structure, thus, becomes indistinguishable from the FakeFactory!

And there’s more.

Beatpick. Beatpick is part of REFF, and they are the main partner form the music section (100Samples). Beatpick has been called to manage RomaEuropa WebFactory’s music section for this year’s competition.

Summing up: same rules, open lincenses adoption, same practices, and even our main music partner handling the music section.

:)

We think that this is a great victory.

RomaEuropa WebFactory adopted all of the instances suggested by REFF’s critique. And we’re happy about it.

And we even got proper credit for the effectiveness of our action: REFF was mentioned multiple times during the press conference as the main factor bringing on this year’s change.

It’s not over, yet.

REFF project goes on by producing about 3 minor events by the end of the year, with one to present the publication that includes the academic productions of our scientific committee.

And then, in 2010, we’ll have an enormous initiative. But we’ll leave it as a little suspence for the next few days. :)

Stay Tuned!

REFF is back again!

RomaEuropaFAKEFactory Launch Party

In the invisible space of the Neo Club, Rejected invites its rejects to the continuous pirate remix of identities, playing on the concept of inclusion/exclusion and on musical remix, digital, human, experiential, in a series of performances, installations, live VJ sets and DJ sets.

in the Red Room:

Empty Mirror“, live performance by Global Groove, a couple of visionary unfair artists that have been working on the idea of the noise of fragments for 20 years;

“Remixing People” by xDxD.vs.xDxD, the inventor of [A]rt is [O]pen [S]ource and creator of cyber bodies and robotic and software arts, and Kevin Pistone, historical figure of Rome’s independent photohraphy scene and founder of the MyJemmaTemp workshop, joining forces with an installation and a photographic set challenging each other disassembling and reassembling people’s bodies.

All in the frame of ATOMIC, the new qeer party that will instantiate its imaginaries built on indie disco and obscene pop with Bebop on the controls, the exhibits and performances by Martin Dee vs Industria Indipendente.

In the Caveau:

an environmental interzone running from Zanzibar to William Burroughs, with a 4 DJ squad, 3 VJs and a videoart installation:

Opening set with the tech house by Jason K, Neo Resident and promoter of the Bootleg and Fonia parties.

Following up, a part of the history to come of the subversive Rome penetrating the world thrugh the paths of D.I.Y. , party culture and the Queer imaginaries of the Phag Off project. Warbear connects plots and configures libertarian dancefloors with a set of Incredibly Strange Techno, mashing up spoken words and vocal samples to 4-quarters narrative structures.

Then Bit_Repeat, Rejected resident Djs, with a techno and minimal set.

The video setup is curated by LPM, the global meeting of live video performances, providing the best performers from the roster of Flyer Visual Agency.

Infidel (Phag Off, L-ektrika,Loaded, Anarchy in the Club), Nikky (Phag Off, Sick Marylin) and Aira (L-ektrika, Kitchen) will alternate at the video controls creating umoral un-pop visions.

The BEAT-ify installation will allow you to loose yourself in the extasy of the synesthesia created between berzerk generative cut-ups and the beats of the dancefloor, under the cures of the FLxER team and xDxD.vs.xDxD

Kanu, party shooter and Rejected promoter, will be the witness of the party.

And the news are not yet over.

RomaeuropaFAKEFactory adds two new sections and a new deadline (May 15th 2009)

100Flash, dedicated to GIF art

and

100Spaces, dedicated to design, architecture and landscape

Starting from March 20th, the new web site will be available: a brand new Open Source platform to manage competitions and a social network. By using it artists will be able to register their remix artworks to the literary (100Quotes), music (100Samples), video (100Cuts), LawArt (legal remix of legislative texts on copyright and patents), and to the two new sections: 100Flash and 100Spaces.

“I am Orson Welles.
I never really wanted to join Roma Europa Web Factory.
I understand the beauty and significance of a fake.
As for my style, for my vision of the cinema, editing is not simply one aspect; it’s the aspect.
Fake is as old as the Eden tree.
Today I believe that man cannot escape his destiny to create whatever it is we make:
jazz, a wooden spoon, or graffiti on the wall.
All of these are expressions of man’s creativity, proof that man has not yet been destroyed by technology.
But are we making things for the people of our epoch or repeating what has been done before?
And finally, is the question itself important?
We must ask ourselves that.
The most important thing is always to doubt the importance of the question.
I am Orson Welles.
I never really wanted to join Roma Europa Web Factory.”

Orson Welles is one of the most influential artists of the contemporary era, touching the domains of cinema, theatre, fiction, radio in a continuous research that trespasses the borders between art, communication, psychology, performance.
His works gave us the chance to perceive art’s transformation, in a form in which art and falsificaion are divided by boundaries that are ethereal and fluid, eventually overlaying and touching.

Orson Welles’ “the War of the Worlds” radio performance was rejected by the RomaWuropa Web Factory competition.

“This is not original work!” was the scream of the Jury.

Orson Welles now joined RomaEuropaFAKEFactory, here:
